NIBRS Tip: LEOKA

Law Enforcement Officers Killed or Assaulted

How are LEOKA incidents reported?

Incidents are reported in NIBRS by identifying the law enforcement officer (LEO) as the victim of Murder or Assault.

What is the definition of an LEO?

       Ordinarily wears a badge and carries a firearm.
       Duly sworn with full arrest powers.
       Member of a law enforcement agency.
       Acting in an official capacity - on duty or off.
       If killed, died from injuries directly related to the incident.

What types of jobs or situations are not included?

       Correctional officers, bailiffs, probation officers, judges, prosecutors, or private security officers.
       Deaths due to natural causes, suicide, or attributed to a personal situation such as domestic violence or a neighbor conflict.

EXCEPTION:  A reserve or correctional officer who is responding to and assisting a LEO in an incident can be reported with LEOKA criteria.
